Review: Egg Presents Sam Divine, DJ Spen and Franky Rizardo

This year has been a massive one for Sam Divine, with two nominations in the DJ Mag Best of British awards as well as an impressive progression with her own record label, D-Vine Sounds. Last Friday saw the House music heavyweight headlining at Egg LDN for the latest edition of Egg Presents, alongside Franky Rizardo and the legendary DJ Spen.

Arriving to the club, it was clear this night was going to be a big one – queues stretched past the barriers and the newly revamped main room was jam packed ready for the first big name of the night, DJ Spen. Watching the Baltimore-based DJ play was entertainment in itself, mixing crowd-pleasers and house classics with an intense concentration and infectious energy that held the majority of the crowd through the two-hour set.

As Divine’s set approached, the main room filled up once more and by the time she appeared behind the booth the entire floor was rammed and the room was buzzing. Joined in the booth by a camera crew – trailing her recent events and documenting her rise through the ranks of House – Sam launched seamlessly from Spen’s soulful set into a more bass-heavy feel, expertly reading the crowd and keeping the energy high with Patrick Topping’s tech house banger Rights. The next two hours exemplified Divine’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the genre, with a re-worked edition of Dennis Ferrer’s Mind Ur Step and Dominica’s Gotta Let You Go as highlights that had the whole room singing along to the vocals.

As the set moved towards the climax, we were left wondering whether Franky Rizardo, up next, could hold on to the buzz in the room. Any doubts were unfounded however, as the Holland export delivered a banging set with tracks like Frankey & Sandrino’s Acamar keeping the attention of the crowd, progressing nicely to finish with chilled-out, melodic tunes that had the remaining dancers shouting for more well after the billed finish at 7.40am.

As the lights came on and the crowd filtered out into the chilly London morning, we felt as though we’d only just stepped in. There’s still plenty to look forward to from Egg this year with Ilario Alicante heading up the next Familia party this weekend, plus a nomination for Best Large Club in the DJ Magazine Awards.

Bontan – Mind Dimension EP

Here’s something released a couple of days ago on the cat-loving label Suara, by Bontan. It’s a two-track EP which is heavily bassline driven.

The first track is entitled ‘Reality’ which has a male talking vocal that is expertly chopped up and laid over a deep and warpy bassline and sketchy drums. As all of Bontan’s tracks, it’s very well produced with loads of mini breakdowns and drops, stabs and extra little effects. The second track is called ‘State Of Mind’ as is very much like the first track, as in it has a deep and warpy bassline and male talking vocal, but this vocal tells more of a story.

Both tracks are worthy of a dancefloor and even sitting here now, my head is bouncing listening to them!

Reza & Barry Obzee – Passion

Here’s something that’s been out a couple of weeks and hit number 25 in the Beatport house charts instantly. A fresh 2015 re-lick of an absolute piano classic from yester-year; Gat Decor – Passion. There are a lot of remixes of old tracks surfacing in the house charts these days, but only a select few make a mark and gain popularity by radio plays and club plays, this is one of those! I am honestly hearing this everywhere at the moment.

If you’ve been a regular follower of this site, you would definitely have heard of both Reza and Barry Obzee (I have even collaborated on a few tracks with the two of them together!). Hailing from Birmingham, Reza has been a signature part of the house scene for many many years, having stamped his name on some of the biggest tracks on the market, do your homework, you know this guys stuff! And joining him on this track, from Surrey, is Barry Obzee. Barry has a huge history within the house and techno fields and a catalogue of releases to boot. The stuff this pair produce together is simply awesome!

So this version of passion brings so many elements from the original but with a few slight key changes and adjustments. A big breakdown and build up, and a bassline created from a very distinct part of the track that absolutely rocks! I’ve personally seen this one go off. It’s been supported by some of the industries biggest djs!

Rudimental ft Will Heard – I Will For Love (Sonny Fodera Remix)

Sonny Fodera’s back in the house! A nicely executed remix of Rudimental’s latest ‘I Will For Love’ ft Will Heard. Sonny’s created a deep 90’s house vibe and locked in the vocals tight with some nice cuts and effects.

The breakdown has all the elements of uplifting subtle strings and beautiful piano chords, with Will Heard rolling in on the drop, nicely chopped and layered on the bassline groove, and then with the reintroduction of the stunning piano chords.

This is a uplifting tune that ticks all the boxes, and I’m sure that if you’re at his upcoming event down at the Egg in London, you’ll probably be raving to it!

Wayne Dudley – Sing / Falling For You

Wayne Dudley brings us his latest release signed to Whore House. With two solid releases; ‘Sing’ & ‘Falling For You’.

If your looking for some modern heavy bassline rollers then ‘Sing’ has what your after with a nice garage esq vibe from the harmonic female vocals and classic pads in the breakdown into a grooving bassline drop.

Now, my personal favourite out of the two is ‘Falling For You’. Being a fan of the piano chords on the dance floor and in the productions, Wayne’s produced a top feel good track.
With a nice intro, teasing vocals and piano, then into break where we feel the full impact of the classic rave chords, vocals and some big breaks, leading us into a bassline drop.

This is a nice production that will please many in the mood to dance!

NY’s Finest – Do You Feel Me (Dosem, Bontan & Gerd Remixes)

New out on the mighty Toolroom Records is this series of remixes of NY’s Finest – Do You Feel Me. Collectively an amazing release for Toolroom, destined for the top of the house charts for sure!

Let kick things off with the Dosem remix, now this can simply be summed up in one word; Amazing! But I will say little more, this version marries together an old sounding house piano and vocal with brand new deep, bumpy basslines, builds and one hell of a drop. This one is staying in my set for a while! Up next is Bontan’s remix, this version is slightly deeper and more underground. The bassline is nice and punchy, and sits under some complex drums, blips & stabs, before an atmospheric breakdown, very nice! Last up is Gerd’s No-kick interpretation, which does exactly that; it features the nice classic piano riff and vocal, some amazing musical elements sat over a nice bass pattern and some real housey hats…. but no kick! Sounds surprisingly good, check it out…

Sweet Female Attitude – Flowers (Sam Divine & Curtis Gabriel Remix)

This is something that has been out a couple of weeks but is taking the industry by storm, it’s been sitting at number one on Traxsource pretty much since it’s release, and is still there now (15th Aug 2015). Well worth a mention!

So, remixing an old classic can be a risky job with the amount of material that gets slated online these days, but this one defies all the negativity and is actually pretty amazing! We all know the original UK Garage classic ‘Flowers’ which hit the charts in a big way back in the day, but listening to the original now just sounds dated. Defected’s ‘Sam Divine’ has joined forces with Curtis Gabriel to bring this classic back up to date, and wow, what a job they have done!

It’s a full vocal remix so you can still sing along with it like the old days, but this time it drops into a deep, bouncy house banger! Bumpy bass, choppy vocals and sketchy drums combine to create something special here.

Out now….. Get. It.

Ucha & The Sloppy 5th’s – Technoroller

Here we go with another massive techno/tech house track. Something fresh out on Hatrax Records by Ucha & The Sloppy 5th’s. I’ve reviewed a couple of bits from the Sloppy 5th’s before and the production level is always high class, this one however, has to be one of my favourites!

I’m not going to go on about this one as you just need to hear it, but from the off it’s a percussive monster with a deep rolling bassline, some nice filtering and choppy vocals. Outstanding!

This is available now on Beatport, it’s one for the main rooms, so grab your copy now…

KORT & Elementary ft Jessie Matthews – Warning

Here’s something fresh from KORT & Elementary, and featuring the amazing vocals from Jessie Matthews, out now exclusively on Traxsource.

For anyone who knows a thing or two about ‘proper’ house music, you will have heard of KORT at some point. KORT had huge releases on massive labels such as Defected and Copyright which cemented his footing within the industry. For this release he teams up with ‘Elementary’ who although seems fairly unheard of, is an absolute master in the studio (trust me on this!), so expect some amazing future productions under this name.

So, let talk about the track! Well…. it’s a genius fusion of piano chords, organs, bumpy bass patterns and an absolutely outstanding vocal. The full verses come on the breakdowns, and over the drums are some great ad-libs and choppy vocal stabs.

This one gets a double thumbs up from me, and definitely one I’ll be hammering out in the clubs. Grab your copy now..

DEV:ROX – Rendezvouz EP

Here is the debut release from DEV:ROX the Rendevouz EP exclusive to Recess Recordings. With two solid Tracks Rondevouz and When Life Breaks down.. These are two tracks to heat up your dance floor.
Rendevouz is has a warm bass line rolling with nicely executed effected vocal saying ‘Rendez Vous’ & Sound fx, building distance, atmosphere & anticipation. As recently road tested by Dev:Rox at the Costa Beatz weekender & Arcko Digital’s Pride Street Party, this track is getting people groovin!

When Life Breaks Down is a more aggressive Heavy Bass line Growler.
With the sample ‘What happens when life breaks down’ effected in and throughout the track. It has low end stabs and well crafted delayed synths played in and out.

A nice debut EP for Dev:Rox! keep and eye on this chap as he has some great forthcoming releases & the launch of his new label Locker Room Records.

Cor Caroli – All Night Long EP

Another release from the Arcko Digital label, and what an absolute whopper it is too! This is a massive two-track EP from Arcko regular ‘Cor Caroli’ hailing from sunny Espanol.

Track one is called ‘All Night Long’ and is a lovely disco infused tech-house banger. A definite feel good tune! Loads of filtering, drum fills, funky wah guitars, and a completely infectious rolling bassline. I think this one is going straight into my next set, I can’t wait to see a crowd reaction on this!

The second track on the EP is called ‘Whatsup’ and is a lot more underground. This features a huge bassy synth stab throughout with a deep bumpy bass pattern, all laid perfectly under some nice sketchy tech drums. Really loving the arrangement of this, everything seems to kick in and drop out perfectly.

So all in all, it’s a massive thumbs up from me. You’d be mental to pass up on this EP. It’s out now so why are you still reading this? Go get it….
