These days Lawrence runs the house music review website ‘Public House UK’, as well as pushing out his own tech house / techno production on some of the industries most credible labels, and having numerous tracks feature in Beatport’s Top 100 charts.

Barry Obzee & Lawrence Friend – Going On

These two have certainly chosen a superb release to get their year started. Out now on Vamos Music which started back in 2012 by Rio Dela Duna within the Housesession label group. Becoming quickly an undisputed label in the house scene, the label is supported by Roger Sanchez, Richie Hawtin, Bob Sinclar, Erick Morillo, David Herrero..

Initially you can tell it’s Barry & Lawrence’s groove from the get go. They have really started to create a signature sound from their grooving drums & rolling percussion..

With effective timing that builds anticipation they introduce “We got a beat going on” sample, teased in then building into the main drop. Nice low cut drums and trippy spacey atmospheric pads and stabs that fills the room before rolling nicely out into that deep rolling bass.

With other recent popular releases out on Jango, Rezonation & Jungle Funk, these two have plenty more dancefloors tricks up their sleeve! I Will be grooving this one into the next Arcko Digital Podcast!

Barry Obzee & Lawrence Friend – Say Hey

Okay, so the perks of running a house music review website is that I get to showcase some of my own productions, and if you’re a keen follower of this website then you’ll know that a lot of the time I team up with my good friend Barry Obzee to produce our own spin on tech-house. This is a track we have recently released on Jango Music which we have been playing out for a while now, always had a good reaction!

A prize goes to the person who comments below with the correct name of the track where the main ‘Ooh Ooh’ sample is from (it’s replayed but sounds enough like the original to tell), hint: it’s an old skool garage track!.

Hope you enjoy, it’s out now. Thank you in advance for all support 🙂

Barry Obzee & Lawrence Friend – Grinning

Well I haven’t posted for quite some time now, the reason behind this is that my beautiful girlfriend gave birth to our son at the beginning of the year and it’s taken it’s toll on my free time and has taken some getting used to! However, things are now on track and you’ll be happy to know that I’m now back to reviewing all your favourite house tracks. This time though I have also recruited another track reviewer who’s going to help out and take Public House UK to the next level. I will do all of the introductions in due time!

Right so let’s get to it… I thought it would be relevant to return with a track from myself and Barry Obzee which was recently released on Lucas Reyas’ label ‘Jango Music’. This is a label that has gone from strength to strength recently, with some top artist releases, we are very grateful to be on this label.

So the track is called ‘Grinning’ and is a nice little tech bouncer with a simple 3-key bass pattern, loads of breakdowns and build-ups. We managed to sample the vocal from a really old track (10 points if you can tell me where from!!), cut it up and laid it over our beats, fortunately it worked! We have had loads of great feedback on this release from some of the industries greatest. Have a listen and see what you think, available now…

Jungle Funk Recordings UK Vol. 1

One of the many perks to running a house music review website is that occasionally I get to feature tracks that I’ve produced and signed to labels. This is one of those occasions!

When producing, I usually team up with my radio co-host Barry Obzee, together we have had tracks released on a fair few labels and also have many more that are being released very soon. For this release, we managed to get signed to Canadian label ‘Jungle Funk Recordings’ which is owned and operated by Jerome Robins and Deko-Ze. We feel very privileged to have our track as a part of the brand new three-track compilation called ‘Jungle Funk Recordings UK Vol 1’. I am going to review all three individually:

House of Virus: Only You – Huge main room house track with some very distinct percussion and massive bass stab pattern on the drop. I really like the piano chords during the breakdown. I’m gonna hammer this in the clubs, it’s big!

Barry Obzee & Lawrence Friend: Bassline Pumpin – It’s hard to review our own track without sounding biased, but this one is full of energy, big techy basslines, synth patterns and stabs. The breakdown stays simple, builds up and has a nice pitched down spoken vocal before that high-energy drop. We’ve already tried and tested this one on the terrace of Space, Ibiza and it went down a treat!

Gordon John: Laying Down The Funk – This one is a definite for any main room set, just check out the bass pattern and you’ll see why! In this track, Gordon has fused together some big hatty tech drums with a seriously sharp and bouncy bass pattern. Honestly, you need to hear this!

Three completely different style tracks and all flying the British flag high. This whole release is available right now exclusive to Beatport for a few weeks before getting released on every platform. Check it..

Barry Obzee & Lawrence Friend ft Sophie Foster – Break My Heart

Right now this one is a bit cheeky as I am actually reviewing my own track! Feel free to send me over your own reviews, I am always open to constructive criticism and I know it’s not going to be to everyone’s taste, but here we go!..

For this track I teamed up with my radio co-host Barry Obzee, and we got the talented Sophie Foster to do the vocals for us. I suppose the style of track would be an old skool sounding chordy tech house tune but with some deep breakdowns and a melodic two-line vocal.

This is available NOW on German label ‘Tactical Records’ as a part of their ‘Ibiza Circo 2014’ release, alongside some other amazing producers. Have a listen and let me know your thoughts by either commenting below or messaging me! Thanks for your time in checking out our latest track, very much appreciated 🙂

Exclusive Interview: LEFTWING & KODY

This month we’ve decided to kick off a new feature to Public House UK and are now introducing featured artist interviews. We are forever reviewing new tracks by many different artists on this site and we feel that it would be great to show you who the artists are and a bit of their background.

For the first of the phuk interviews we have a dj/production duo who are absolutely smashing the deep house scene to pieces. With releases on top labels such as OFF Recordings, NOIR Music, Anjuna Deep and their own new label LOST Records. These guys are huge already after only being around since mid-2012, and can only get bigger..

For our first PHUK interview, we bring you.. LEFTWING & KODY. We kept things fairly short n’ sweet but had a few questions for them, and here they are:

So guys, how did Leftwing & Kody come about, how did you form?

Leftwing & Kody: We’ve been working together for about 5 years. we met DJ’ing at the same promotion. At the time we were both making music individually and were playing each others tracks then decided to jump in the studio together. The rest is history.

If you were to individually describe your production style in three words each, what words would they be?

Kody: Potent, Energizing, Dynamic
Leftwing: Jacking, Hooky, Hype

What’s the next step for your music, and where do you see yourselves going in 2014?

Leftwing & Kody: We have releases lined up for the first half of 2014. More music coming on OFF Recordings, Lapsus, Glasgow Underground and a 5 track EP on our own imprint Lost Records which will be out in the summer.

Hopefully the gigs will keep coming and we’ll still be gigging at the end of 2014, can’t ask for any more than that!

Your sounds are inspired by a fusion of quite British rooted club genres, like Garage and Deep House, so do you prefer playing in the UK or abroad?

Leftwing & Kody: We play a lot in the UK so it’s always very interesting to see the reaction of the crowds abroad. No real preference though we are happy playing in clubs regardless of where they are. As long as the crowd are enjoying it, we’re happy!

With a catalogue of releases on labels such as OFF, Alive & Noir, what has been your favourite release so far?

Kody: I think ‘Bump and Flex’ for me has to be the favourite as it was our breakthrough release!
Leftwing: My favourite is ‘You Were’, its almost 2 years old now and still does the damage in the clubs.

What is your inspiration in the studio?

Leftwing & Kody: Making music can be quite frustrating at times so we keep things light hearted in the studio. We are constantly taking the piss out of each other joking around and having wars with the other guys we share the studio space with.

You have launched your new label ‘Lost Records’, what style of tracks are you looking for, and are there any artists you are excited about?

Leftwing & Kody: We are looking for forward thinking music that has a nod to the past. We are really excited about the next few releases. We have 2 EP’s from some guys that are breaking through at the moment PAWSA & Origins Sound and we we’re lucky enough to sign a track from German Brigante who we think is going to be massive this year. We also have a remix on one of the packages by ‘Copy Paste Soul’, we think he’s going to have a big year also.

A huge thank you to Leftwing & Kody for taking the time out to answer our questions, we certainly look forward to their future projects and I will definitely be heading our to one of their London gig soon. You can follow Leftwing & Kody at the following places (click on the links):

Leftwing & Kody have have teamed up with Kruse & Nuernberg to write a new track being released today (10th February) on OFF Recordings. I recently found the preview online and did a review of it (find it: here). The track is called ‘Turning’ and is huge, make sure you pick up a copy! Here’s the preview.. enjoy!
